If Jane Eyre Were a Murderer…

They had me at “Reader, I murdered him…”

I saw two posts mentioning this quirky book, “Jane Steele,” this afternoon while perusing WordPress (over at Traveling, Gladly Beyond and I Wuv Books).

This is the first I’ve heard of it, but if you’re combining Jane Eyre with crazy creepiness it has to be good, right?? (Also, there is apparently another book titled “Jane Slayre: The Literary Classic with a Blood-sucking Twist.”  It involves vampires.  Yup.)

What I find fascinating is that is portrayed in Charlotte Brontë’s original version as quite rational and even peaceful.  A murdering Jane, then, would be quite the ironic twist…

If you’ve read either of these books, did you like them? What are some other literary retellings you’ve enjoyed?

  1. Thanks for the shout out. I wouldn’t really say Jane Steele is a bloodthirsty killer she’s just a bit more morally flexible 🙂 I’m a bit fan of all retellings but Jane Steele is most definitely one of the best as it’s written very much in the style of the original.

I did a huge, big gushy review a few months ago which you can see here: https://iwuvbooks.wordpress.com/2016/04/17/book-review-jane-steele-by-lyndsay-faye/
