Over the past week, I moved into my very first apartment. With about a week and a half left now before I officially start the the PhD program in music theory and cognition at Northwestern University, I have a fantastic (and even swanky!) place to live just north of Chicago, Illinois. My parents deserve a major shout-out because if they hadn’t driven me to and from stores and performed some heavy lifting of furniture there’s simply no way the apartment would have turned out anywhere close to this nice! I am extremely grateful.
Anyways, while we were setting up the apartment I kept being reminded of scenes from one of my favorite movies: “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” If you haven’t seen it, it’s a fun, quirky spy flick starring Superman and the Lone Ranger (a.k.a. Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer). It’s hilarious, action-packed, and just a great film.
Without further ado, then, here is my moving experience as told by “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.”
1. Trying to follow the GPS:
2. Realizing you only have about 5 days to furnish the entire apartment from scratch:
3. When your parents are at Walmart trying to buy all your stuff and you’re back at the apartment jamming to music while you unpack:
4. When your parents become concerned about your furniture choices:
5. Being told to “make an offer” for a piece of furniture on Craigslist:
6. And finally, how you feel basically the entire time:
Drop everything and go watch this movie!! (If you’d like.) Then you can come back here so we can nerd out over it together!
(Other great movies: Batman and The Lion King)

Best of wishes in your new apartment!!!

I love this post! I really liked the movie as well and I perfectly understand you! I just moved in my own apartment as well and a major shout out goes to my parents as well! …and yes, they may not understand, but furniture has to match!!

Dear Aubrey: What sorts of things do you study in your Phd program? I’m interested in finding out. By the way, I have a B.A. in Music Histort and Theory.

Awesome! I’ll be studying how the brain processes and understands music as well as how music itself works (they’re interconnected).

Have you read Oliver Sack’s book on the subject, “Musicophilia?”

Have a wonderful time. Evanston is a great place to study and play. There’s a great little bookstore down one of the short alleys and behind a store. Just great. Have a wonderful time and enjoy Northwestern.

I’m sure you’ll love it. The lake looks wonderful from there and there are great walking and biking paths. Lots of places to eat at well.

This was hilarious! I love the man from uncle. I have a huge man crush on Henry Cavill..it’s such a shame that he’s not in more movies.
