If Book Characters Celebrated Thanksgiving (And What They Would be Thankful for)

Thanksgiving may be a traditionally American holiday, but what if your favorite book characters celebrated it, as well? Amid the food comas and family visits, here’s what I think they might be thankful for:

1. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Lizzie and her father would be incredibly thankful for Mr. Darcy saving Lydia from ruin. Jane and Bingley would be thankful they found each other and Lizzie and Darcy would second that for both them and each other. Mrs. Bennett would be thankful that three of her bajillion daughters are (finally) married!

2. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

Harry, Ron, and Hermione would sit around a Weasley family table and be thankful for having finally defeated Lord Voldemort and be able to live without fear.

3. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Nick would be back home sitting around the table when he remembered Gatsby and how thankful he was to have known such a man.

4. Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

Frodo, Sam, and the rest of the hobbits would sit around a large and plentiful feast, giving thanks that they were successful in destroying the one ring and for friends and family with whom they can now spend time in safety.

5. Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss

Finally, instead of turkey, Sam-I-Am would celebrate Thanksgiving by eating green eggs and ham with the one who introduced them to him, and be thankful that in the end he did try them.

Like these literary characters, I certainly have much to be thankful for! Here’s to another year and all of the adventures it will hold.

Happy Thanksgiving!

  1. This post made me grin. Especially “Mrs. Bennett would be thankful that three of her bajillion daughters are (finally) married!” I can totally see that. 😀

In a funny twist of coincidence, I wrote a story on my cosistories.wordpress.com blog about Christine from Phantom of the Opera trying to enjoy a quiet Thanksgiving by herself. Needless to say, it doesn’t happen. Madcap craziness ensues. This is the link to it if you want to check it out:
