A Love-Hate Relationship With Alice in Wonderland

alice-in-wonderland-1253474_1920

What is it about Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland that makes me obsessed with it when I’m not reading it and more calmly apathetic while I am reading it?

Me when I’m not reading it: “Yeeeeessss Alice in Wonderland is the best book ever! I am obsessed.”

Me while reading it: “Yeah, this book is pretty weird and violent.  It’s okay.”

And the cycle continues like Alice falling down a never-ending rabbit hole.

Maybe I’m in love with the idea of Wonderland without being in love with the specific words and stories in the book itself.

Classical Music Stories: Alice in Wonderland

Down the Rabbit Hole

You’re falling! Down, down, down you go. You keep expecting to collide with the ground and keep bracing yourself but you keep falling just the same.

You’re still falling.

You’re still falling.

You start to fall asleep (high notes). After all, you can only grit your teeth in expectation for so long.

Once you’re asleep, you have a nightmare (very low notes). What if you never ever stop falling but are stuck in a loop forever??

When you wake up you find yourself on the floor. Apparently landing woke you up, but you’re not hurt at all—phew.

(But of course you still have no idea what’s going on…)

Where do you think the music would go next if it continued?

As a result, the residents of Wonderland transformed their home into a tourist attraction, welcoming visitors and leading them through guided tours that include a sighting of the croquet grounds, the Duchess’s home, and of Continue reading “Judging the Book By Its Cover: Your Guided Tour Through Wonderland”
