Your Brain, the DJ (When Songs Spontaneously Combine)

I’ve started realizing how weird my brain is when it comes to music. Probably everyone has had an experience where a tiny bit of a song gets stuck in your head on repeat. But have you ever had a tiny bit of a song combine with another tiny bit of a song?

For example. Continue reading “Your Brain, the DJ (When Songs Spontaneously Combine)”

Repetition in Pop Music, Classical Music, and Poetry

piano-1522855_1920

Have you ever thought about how much repetition there is in music, whether popular or classical? It’s so ubiquitous that it’s easy to forget about how weird it actually is. If you were reading a book and the exact same chapter was repeated you’d probably be scratching your head and wondering if you had a messed up copy. But in music, that’s the norm! So Continue reading “Repetition in Pop Music, Classical Music, and Poetry”

The Bohemian Rhapsody of Classical Music

I have discovered…drumroll please…the classical music equivalent of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. And it’s so exciting.

“Tzigane (rapsodie de concert)” is a piece for violin and orchestra, written by Maurice Ravel in the 1920s, and it uses this hilarious back-and-forth between musical styles in a really similar way to Bohemian Rhapsody. Continue reading “The Bohemian Rhapsody of Classical Music”

Dinosaur Sweaters and Riding Polar Bears (i.e. The Mystery Blogger Award)

img_5090First, I want to give a shout out to all of my readers, especially those who return again and again to my blog to read and interact with my posts. Lately I’ve been struggling to keep up with my own blogging and especially with reading others’ posts as I’ve been adjusting to Ph.D. life, so I appreciate your patience and support as I find a new blogging schedule that will get me back on track. I’ve also been having some ideas for future posts and post series that I’m really excited about and that are in the works, so I’m looking forward to sharing those with you soon, as well!

Last week I was incredibly honored to be nominated for the Mystery Blogger Award by Michael Miller over at My Comic Relief. While Continue reading “Dinosaur Sweaters and Riding Polar Bears (i.e. The Mystery Blogger Award)”

Why Do the “Bad Guys” Listen to Classical Music?

sherlock-and-music

Have you ever noticed that in some movies the “bad guy” is really into classical music (particularly from the 18th-19th centuries)? Siegfried in Get Smart, Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows…etc. But why? As Continue reading “Why Do the “Bad Guys” Listen to Classical Music?”

Songs For Every Book

A Choose-Your-Own-Adventure (…with Accordion Music)

Because this song reminds me of two different characters I decided to present both. You can choose which one appeals to you more, turning the music into a “choose your own adventure” of sorts. As always, I love hearing about what other characters the music reminds you of in the comments section so please feel free to share!

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Jane Eyre (Option 1)
and Anna Karenina (Option 2)
