About the Blog

The end.

When we come to the last words of an incredible book we can get a sinking feeling. We want the liquid ink of the words to be poured together in a giant pool that we can immerse ourselves in. We want the pages to become origami-folded into a creature that we can wrap our arms around and hug. Whatever we want, we don’t want the story to be over.

I like to think of If Mermaids Wore Suspenders as the Neverland of fictional worldsHere, your favorite books and characters are still alive and interacting with one another (Who Would Win in a Sword Fight: Peter Pan or Romeo?), with our modern lives (Mr. Darcy and Whiskey: If Literary Characters Were Beverages), and with music to create brand new, immersive experiences (Classical Music Stories: Dumbledore and J.S. Bach and Songs for Every Book: Frankenstein and Sia).

The books:

The majority of the blog explores “classic literature” like The Great Gatsby, Les Misérables, and Romeo and Juliet, but you’ll find some more recent reads like The Martian and All the Light We Cannot See, as well.

The music:

You’ll find artists as diverse as J.S. Bach, Taylor Swift, Sleigh Bells, Disney, Say Lou Lou, and Europe–because incredible fictional worlds don’t just come in one genre!

In a nutshell, this blog is designed to be a creative escape for all of us who love exploring fictional worlds. So whether you’re looking to stay immersed in your favorite stories, discover some brand new worlds, get a creative boost before tackling that tricky school or work project, or just have some nerdy fun, If Mermaids Wore Suspenders was made for you!

Thank you in advance for reading, and I truly hope you enjoy!

    1. I’m so glad you’re enjoying it! 🙂 Right now I’ve posted about Anna Karenina through the music of Grieg and 1984 through the music of John Cage, but others will definitely be posted in the future! Thanks for reading!!

  2. Hi Aubrey, what an intriguing title for a blog! And also the concept of mixing characters from different books, Think you’ve found a niche 🙂 I listen to all types of music (and yes, I’m a frustrated musician) but when I write, either fiction or poetry, I listen to classical as words get in the way. Once I’ve finished the first draft, I can then play something with lyrics in for every other draft. I like to sing when I’m editing, as long as the neighbours are out 🙂

    1. Thank you! I’m glad I found your blog. It looks refreshingly unique!!

I’ve become really excited about the connections between music and literature over the past year or so, so it’s been great to share those ideas with others and learn from them, too. That’s interesting about your writing style! I don’t write a whole lot but when I do I tend to do it in silence. It’s interesting–I tend not to translate onto paper when I imagine stories and get inspired by music, but I’ve been meaning to try it! I am also a big fan of singing, so I can relate to that. 🙂 Thanks for commenting!
