Classical Music Stories is a series where music is listened to as though it were the soundtrack to one of your favorite books (or in this case, poems).
The following music/story pairing is based on Robert Frost’s poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”:
Part One: The speaker begins his journey. While he Continue reading “Classical Music Stories: Robert Frost”
Both of these women are quite intelligent and imposing. If the two of them sat down to play chess, then, who do you think would win?
Let’s consider: Mary Poppins is Continue reading “Who Would Win at Chess: Miss Peregrine or Mary Poppins?”

Previously on ARRiel the Pirate Mermaid…

We left ARRiel on quite the cliffhanger…what would she do? Would the dinosaur eat her? Would they become friends? Would she get a hair cut???
The wait is over.

No one captures the angst of Pride and Prejudice quite like T. Swift does. What follows, then, is a trip through this classic novel by means of some of her greatest songs:
1) Mean: When Darcy insults Lizzy’s Continue reading “Pride and Prejudice As Told By Taylor Swift Songs”
When I saw these amazing shoes made out of paper, I wondered what would happen if someone were to make shoes out of book pages. And then what if those shoes were actually made to look like the themes or setting of the stories they were made with in some way?
I would love a pair of shoes made from pages of The Night Circus. Imagine what they would look like if they matched the magical atmosphere of that book! I’d also be sorely tempted to buy some Great Gatsby shoes. It would be interesting how the artist/shoemaker combined the flair of the Roaring 20s with the tension between characters.
So if you could have any pair of book-themed shoes, which ones would you want?
Marie Louise Otte’s paper shoes were a discovery on Instagram and I can’t decide if they’re more macabre or beautiful, or maybe both. Ghosts of Marie Antoinette, and they also remind me of the old violins bought by Rita Lydig to form shoe horses for her dancing slippers. If this inspires you, there is more of Rita’s excess (and emeralds) here.

Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A major reminds me a lot of Ophelia from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Here’s what I imagined while listening to Continue reading “Classical Music Stories: Ophelia and Mozart”

One of the most beautiful and heartbreaking songs I’ve ever heard has to be “I Found” by the British Indie band, Amber Run. I’ve loved this song for a while now, but recently I realized that the lyrics sound an awful lot like Éponine’s pain as Continue reading “Les Misérables and British Indie Pop (Songs For Every Book)”

What happens when a book, song, or piece of art is given a title that has seemingly nothing to do with the work itself? Or when something inside the work just doesn’t seem to align with the rest of it?
Apparently, our brains naturally try to connect the dots. We’ll Continue reading “Looking for the Author’s Meaning (Or How I Pranked My Creative Writing Class)”
Over the past week, I moved into my very first apartment. With about a week and a half left now before I officially start the the PhD program in music theory and cognition at Northwestern University, I have a Continue reading “Moving Into An Apartment (As Told By “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.”)”
